Grandmaster is a title awarded by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in competitive chess based on the player's relative rating (ELO) which is determined by playing other players. It is a lifelong title and is the highest title a chess player can obtain other than becoming World Champion. The great majority of grandmasters are men. The Woman Grandmaster is a similar title awarded only to women, with lower requirements. It can also be earned by winning the Women's World Championship.
